About Us

How Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry Began

We started in August 2010 with a burning desire to help financially struggling pet owners in Phoenix feed and keep their four legged best friends, and a $40 donation.

People and their pets in Arizona are suffering. The shelters are completely full – not because the pets are unwanted but because many owners can’t afford to feed them any longer. Arizona is now the second poorest state in the nation. According to the Arizona Republic, the unemployment rate is the highest in 30 years, Middle Americans are losing their jobs and their homes in record numbers, one in five people live in poverty, and 13.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty level.

Our Mission Statement and What We Do

No one should have to choose between feeding their pets or feeding themselves. Empty Bowl Pet Food Pantry helps pet owners facing financial challenges keep the promise they made to their pets to love and care for them forever. We distribute free pet food, conduct spay/neuter clinics and raise awareness through inspiration and teaching of humane treatment of animals in the community.

Who We Are

Mary Neuling

“I do this for Roxie and all the other pets who deserve a chance to stay in their forever home.

Roxie is my lovable 1 year American Bulldog mix, who is 90% blind and crippled. When she was a pup, she didn’t get much to eat and became very weak. She just about gave up until I found her. Today she is safe, loved, and has plenty to eat. I am here to help all the Roxies because they can’t help themselves.

As an animal advocate and part of the Animal Kinship Ministry, I am committed to feeding and saving the lives of animals, and especially helping those pet families who are homeless and unemployed. As EBPFP’s accountant, I know how hard we try to help as many pet families as we can.”

CJ Anderson

My business is safety, health & environmental risk management for 32 years; focused on education, special project and risk reduction, assisting people with creating, turning knowledge into action, living a more empowered, holistic life.  American  Red Cross programs (both volunteer and paid),  Az Chapter, National Safety Council, Maricopa Community Colleges in disaster and health/safety services, and assisting other Non profits with Board and Special Programs, feeds my passion for community service.

I have realized, that disasters are not just the community events that fire departments and FEMA respond to, they are also small events that are just as challenging to that individual or family:

A catastrophic illness, loss of job or home, losing life savings, returning from war broken and closed down… all this and more contribute to the 95,000 pets given to the 2nd largest animal control in the US after LA, ~ Maricopa County.

THIS could happen – to me, members of my family, my friends.

Many times having a pet, is the only reason to get out of bed.  It was, for my Mom.

For the elderly it could mean the only friend they have in an uncaring world.  A proud Senior, Vet, Person with disability, frequently wont ask for help for themselves, but they will for a beloved pet.  The door then opens to help in other ways.

A can of food to holding a food drive at your organization… So many ways to help, to touch a heart. Please join us in this outreach!
